A Message From Michael D. Covert

Michael D. Covert currently serves as the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY. The functional areas he oversees include Housing & Residence Life, Campus Center & Event Services, Campus & Community Engagement, Greek Life, Student Wellbeing, Campus Health Clinic, Counseling, Student Success & Retention, and Dining Services. Additionally, Michael frequently serves as an adjunct faculty instructor in the Educational Policies Studies and Evaluation program at the University of Kentucky. Michael received his B.A. in Psychology from Transylvania University, his M.S. in Education from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation from the University of Kentucky. He has worked at Transylvania University since 1996, with previous experience at Indiana University-Bloomington and Washington University in St. Louis. While at Washington University, Michael had the good fortune of working with James E. McLeod, longtime Vice Chancellor for Students and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, who was fond of saying, “We stand on the shoulders of those who come before us.” It’s incredibly true that none of us stands alone or on our own. We all stand on the shoulders of someone who came before us; someone who laid the foundation, set an example, taught us, encouraged us, and mentored us. A few of the giants who helped to inspire Michael along the way and to whom he owes special gratitude include Leonard Johnson, J. Richard Thompson, Michael G. Moore, Bob Weith, Tony Nowak, Chris Loving, Jill Stratton, Randy Hays, Jane Jensen, John Thelin, and Michael K. Vetter. His colleagues at Transylvania continue to inspire him each and every day and (thankfully) tolerate his witty sarcasm and addiction to Diet Coke. Michael has also been blessed with sharing this adventure for the past 28 years with his wife, Kara Covert, a fellow Higher Education leader in Advancement. Their experience in HE, knowledge of student development theory, and chaos management has been extremely beneficial during their 17-year old son Evan’s ongoing college search process.

In Support of ACPA Foundation

Founded in 1994 during the presidency of Charles Schroeder, the purpose of the ACPA Educational Leadership Foundation (501c3 non-profit organization) is “to enhance the student affairs profession and to generate and disseminate knowledge of college students at all levels within higher education” (Article Three of the Articles of Incorporation). The organization is now known as the ACPA Foundation to more concisely communicate its role as the fundraising arm of ACPA College Student Educators International.

The Mission - The ACPA Foundation exists to support the priorities and activities of ACPA by raising funds and developing resources that help the Association fulfill its mission.

The Vision - The ACPA Foundation will develop sufficient assets to effectively and sustainably fund ACPA’s efforts to provide excellent professional development opportunities to members, advance knowledge in the field, and support the transformative effect of education in the lives of college students.

In order to fulfill its purpose and mission, the Foundation invites members and non-members alike to provide philanthropic support for ACPA's vital initiatives involving research, scholarship, professional development and leadership program.
